Mandate
To provide guidance and to select standards and methods
for the building and maintenance of the CGKN data catalogues. These
catalogues will be built from distributed databases, maintained
by individual agencies that are based on an international standard
and connected by a common protocol.
Principles

Each
metadata catalogue will remain under the control of the source
agency, which will be responsible for its maintenance and
upkeep. |

Agency catalogues will conform to the CGKN metadata standards. |

Each
agency will participate at its own rate and will strive to
complete the catalogues for the identified CGKN priority data
sets. |
Membership
All
Territorial, Provincial and Federal geoscience agencies are currently
active with the data catalogue project. A small group of Provincial
and Federal representatives has been active in defining the CGKN
metadata standard profile and the selection of tools and software
for use by agencies for the data catalogue project.
Funding
Each agency is contributing to the project and will continue
to maintain its own catalogue, including the hardware and software
systems required for its support. Initial seed funding has come
from the Targeted Geoscience Initiative of the Geological Survey
of Canada.
Funding will
be sought from national programs, such as Geoconnections, to continue
to build the data catalogue into the envisioned comprehensive geoscience
metadata collection.
Natural Resources
Canada's Geological Survey of Canada continues to support the data
catalogue by supporting two members of the CGKN secretariat. Provincial
/ Territorial support is provided by one participant in the CGKN
secretariat and many members in the subgroup.
Planning
and Implementation
The
subgroup has established a long-term plan to guide the development
of the data catalogue. This plan will be reviewed annually, with
the goal of developing annual project plans that will attract funding
from national programs.
Co-ordination
The
subgroup will meet monthly via conference call and will report to
the Data Infrastructure Working Group monthly. The minutes of these
meetings will be posted on the CGKN web site, for review by members
of the CGKN. The subgroup will submit its annual plan to the CGKN
secretariat for approval and will prepare an annual written report
of its activities.
